Protect what matters before you focus only on growth.
Insurance helps transfer the financial impact of certain risks. Its terms matter because cover only works as intended when they are understood.
What it means
Insurance is designed to help protect against a financial loss caused by specific events. It is not a substitute for savings, and it is not a way to chase investment returns.
The important questions are what needs protection, how much cover is relevant, how long it is needed and what the policy does—and does not—cover.
Why it matters
- Life insurance
- May help protect dependants if an income earner dies, subject to the policy terms and claim conditions.
- Health insurance
- May help with eligible medical costs, but limits, waiting periods, co-pays and exclusions need attention.
- Other protection needs
- Depending on circumstances, accident, disability, property or liability risks may also need consideration.
- Continuity
- One major event can disrupt a financial plan, so protection belongs alongside savings goals.
How to think about it
- Coverage: What financial loss is the cover intended to address?
- Term: How long is that protection likely to be needed?
- Premium: Is the cost understandable and sustainable for the required period?
- Exclusions: What is not covered, and what waiting periods or conditions apply?
- Claim conditions: What information and disclosures are required for a valid claim?
Common mistakes
- Choosing based only on premium, without reading benefits and limits.
- Treating insurance as an investment return comparison.
- Leaving out relevant facts in a proposal form or assuming exclusions will not matter.
- Buying multiple policies without checking what each one actually covers.
Questions to ask
- What event am I trying to protect against?
- What are the coverage limits, exclusions and waiting periods?
- What must be disclosed before purchase?
- What are the conditions for making a claim?

Insurance is designed to transfer specific financial risks, not to replace savings or chase investment returns. The useful questions are what needs protection, for how long and what the policy terms actually cover.
